We Tried to Catch Up With Nickelback—But Got The SuperMicks (Kent’s Real Secret Weapon) Instead

Summary
The SuperMicks are Kent’s not-so-best-kept secret, and if you haven’t caught their new Found Me EP yet, you’re missing out on a band who mix proper tunes, honest graft, and a level of banter that’ll make you wish you were in the rehearsal room. From studio stares and Nickelback confessions to festival ambitions and breaking a worrying number of drumsticks, this is The SuperMicks—raw, hilarious, and ready to take over the world (or at least the local radio).

By Echo Rebel UK

First off, congrats on the Found Me EP! Before we dig in, a serious journalistic question: if Nickelback are Canada’s finest export, does that make The SuperMicks Kent’s best-kept secret—or are you planning to take over the world one radio-ready banger at a time?

Wayne doesn’t miss a beat. “Ha ha, first of all—I read through this whole interview and was cracking up so much the wife told me to shut it because she’s watching television! 😆🤣 Hopefully, it’s part of both! We might well be Kent’s best kept secret (which we plan to explode to the world, so not for long) but yeah, let’s get on as many stations as possible—let’s get heard on ’em all! 🤟🏾😎”

The Super Questions

Let’s start at the beginning: How did The SuperMicks come together? Who had the first ‘let’s start a band’ moment, and who took the most convincing?

Wayne: “Long story short… myself and my best pal Jude Green, originally in the band about 13 years ago—covers band days! We always wanted to write our own stuff.
Life happened, we didn’t really play for a long time. Covid hit and we were all locked away like lab rats, chatting about wanting to play.
As soon as lockdown lifted, we set up as an originals duo. Jude was a friend of Greg (bassist) and he was roped in—sharpish too, lol.
The two close pals that stepped away from the band (Jude and Curtis, Curt came in as our drummer) left myself and Greg alone… in the studio… gazing at each other for longer than our wives thought was acceptable!
Somewhere along the line, Dave (lead guitar) and James (rhythm guitar) came along and have stuck with us over two years now! And Dan was straight in and on it from minute one! It was just a ‘Grohl & Hawkins’ moment (being I used to be a drummer, much like Grohl). Me and Dan click very quickly and easily!
…The band lives on!!! 🤟🏾”

You’re all hands-on with everything from recording to music videos. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned being a truly independent band in 2024?

TSM: “We certainly find things as hard as the next band doing all originals! But the best lesson learnt so far—we’d say all the hard work, even if it feels slow, genuinely shows when people start recognising us as a band, or even just your face. Sometimes you don’t expect it, and it’s a great feeling knowing people outside your circle are noticing what you’re doing!”

There’s a definite streak of Foo Fighters and Kings of Leon in your sound… and a cheeky bit of Nickelback. Was that always intentional, or did you just wake up one day with a sudden urge to play ‘How You Remind Me’ backwards?

Wayne (taking one for the team): “I’ll take this one, as it’s not fair to drag the lads down with me, lmfao. I—and I alone—am the only one that has any Nickelback influences, lol!
At school, learning guitar and drums, the heavier side of their riffs were among the bands I was learning at the time, so they’re in the mixture somewhere!
Nickelback, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, Queen—these were all a mixture of what would come out in my writing. Now, it’s heavily mixed with Foo Fighters, and yep, some Kings of Leon in there too (shout out to Jude for that one!).”

‘Found Me’ feels like it’s written for the big stage. What’s been your favourite gig moment so far—and what’s the dream venue you’d love to headline?

TSM: “As a whole, I think it’s got to be the phone call after we got asked to support Collateral on their UK Tour!! We were stoked. Felt like something was coming from the work and time we’d put in—that was a little slice of what we’re aiming for!
We’d love to headline Glastonbury, Wembley, O2 Arena to name a few 🤟🏾 Big supports and big festivals!”

The new EP is super polished. What does the creative process look like for you? Are you the ‘jam-it-out-in-the-room’ type, or ‘one guy brings a voice note and everyone runs with it’?

Wayne: “Probably a bit of both, tbh. I’m always active when creating—never gives the lads much time to get up to speed with the last track when I’m sending over three new ones, lol! Voice notes, clips of ideas, and then yeah, move it to the studio to jam out, figure out right and wrong sounds as a group, then mould the track for live performances and tweak for the recorded version too.”

Individual Spotlight: Meet The Micks

Let’s get to know the personalities behind the band—quick intros:

  • Wayne (vocals/guitar): “If I could duet with anyone? Oh maaaaan… Freddie Mercury of the fallen, Dave Grohl of the now! I’d be lying if I didn’t say Linkin Park crossed with Jay-Z, and 2Pac smashing a verse over some heavy rock ’n’ roll.”
  • Dave (lead/rhythm guitar): “Hotel California. Fender Telecaster—ride or die.”
  • James (rhythm guitar): “Rage Against the Machine—‘Bulls on Parade’—first on the van playlist.”
  • Greg (bass): “The bass isn’t just a supporting act—it’s the heartbeat, the backbone, the force that makes you feel the music rather than just hear it. Sure, guitars might catch your ear, but you feel the bass in your soul. It gives The SuperMicks depth, groove, that pulse that makes your chest vibrate. Without it, the music would be hollow—missing the very foundation that makes it hit so hard. Whether it’s locking in with the drums or adding deep, melodic richness, bass is the glue that holds it together.”
  • Dan (drums): “I’ve murdered way too many sticks to count. As for stage mishaps? It’s either accidentally starting the wrong song in the early days… or straight up passing out.”

Nickelback Quickfire Round

You knew it was coming. Greg: “Wayne will answer these—he got us into this mess! 😆”

  1. How do you really feel about ‘Rockstar’ (the song, not the lifestyle)?
    Wayne: “Not a fan!”
  2. Who in the band could pull off Chad Kroeger’s hair?
Wayne: “Dan (drummer)—he has that fair hair too!”
  3. If you could add one Nickelback song to your setlist, which would it be and why?
Wayne: “‘Animals’—fast, rocked-out energy. I remember learning it on guitar! Also ‘Figured You Out’—learnt that one on drums and sang it 13 years ago in the covers band days!”
  4. Would you rather headline Download Festival or support Nickelback on a sold-out world tour?
Wayne: “Oh man, purely on levels alone—and again, not answering for the others—support Nickelback! Regardless of who likes them, they sell out… massively!”
  5. What’s your favourite ‘Why does everyone hate Nickelback?’ meme?
Wayne: “Star Trek: ‘I tell you play some music… and you play Nickelback!’ Classic.”

Wrap-Up

What’s next for The SuperMicks? Any big plans, tours, or secrets you can share with us?

“We can indeed! We’re working on singles and an album, and there’ll be music videos to come. We’re playing MRF25—which is a big deal for us! Local lads playing the Dreamland stage is massive. We’re looking forward to rocking the stage—25th October, don’t miss it!!!”

And—because we ask everyone—what advice would you give your younger self, just starting out in music, knowing everything you know now?

“Work harder than we already have—that’ll only increase the chance of being ahead of where we are now! And search for the full band as a teenager instead of as a 35-year-old dude, lol.”

Cheers, guys!!
TSM out!
