We Don’t Know What This Is, But It’s Definitely Entertaining

Echo Scale™: ??/5

When Performance Outruns the Music

Every now and then, something lands in the Echo Rebel UK inbox that makes us double-take. A submission so gloriously unhinged, so utterly unapologetic, that we have to ask ourselves was this meant for us, or did it escape from an alternate dimension? Enter April Brucker’s holiday single, “Merry Christmas, I’m So Glad I Didn’t Marry You!”

Before we even hit play, the press sheet reads like a fever dream. A self-described television ventriloquist, actress, comedienne, and author, April has been featured everywhere from Judge Jerry (NBC) and What Would You Do? (ABC) to My Strange Addiction (TLC) and Last Comic Standing. She’s a Las Vegas performer, a puppet master, and apparently now, a recording artist.

And because we’re a brutally honest online music magazine, we’ll do what we always do call it exactly as we hear it.

Musicality? Minimal. Personality? Maxed Out.

Let’s start with the music. Technically, yes there’s a backing track. There’s rhythm, there’s structure, and somewhere in there, you could argue there’s melody. But this isn’t a song you listen to for its production or sonic texture. It’s performance art wrapped in sleigh bells, with April delivering her lines like she’s halfway between a cabaret act and a late-night talk show meltdown.

If you’re expecting a Mariah-style vocal or a polished pop arrangement, stop right now. April’s delivery is part spoken word, part comedy monologue, and entirely chaos. It shouldn’t work, yet somehow it kind of does purely because it’s so committed to being her.

The track features her gold-digging puppet sidekick, May Wilson, who pops up throughout like a twisted Christmas elf. Together, they sing (or maybe shout) their way through a breakup anthem that turns heartache into holiday theatre. It’s the kind of performance that makes you both cringe and smile at the same time and that’s a rare thing.

The Backstory: From “My Strange Addiction” to “Mister Not-So-Okay”

This isn’t just a random novelty single. There’s a backstory here that deserves its own Lifetime movie. Years ago, April’s ex-fiancé famously gave her an ultimatum: “It’s me or the puppets.” She chose the puppets obviously and the whole saga ended up in the Daily Mail UK and The Daily Star.

Now, fast-forward to 2025, and April’s channelling that heartbreak into art. “Merry Christmas, I’m So Glad I Didn’t Marry You!” is her not-so-subtle message to every “Mr. Not-So-Okay” who’s come along since. It’s campy, bitter, funny, and oddly empowering kind of like if Dolly Parton and Miss Piggy started a feud and settled it through song.

A Performer First, a Singer… Somewhere Down the List

Let’s be clear: April Brucker isn’t a musician in the traditional sense. She’s a performer. And as a performer, she commits. Theatrically. Ridiculously. Completely.

Her background in Las Vegas revues, Off-Broadway theatre, and New York comedy clubs gives her an edge most pop stars wouldn’t dare touch. She knows how to fill a room, command a stage, and make people look even if half of them are looking in disbelief.

This track isn’t trying to be pretty. It’s trying to be unforgettable. And in that respect, it succeeds spectacularly.

The Sound of Glitter-Covered Defiance

From the opening jingle to the last sarcastic laugh, “Merry Christmas, I’m So Glad I Didn’t Marry You!” is unapologetically brash. The production sounds like a karaoke track that got possessed by Liberace’s ghost, and the vocals hover somewhere between “stand-up routine” and “Broadway audition tape.”

But beneath the chaos, there’s something surprisingly authentic about it. April doesn’t pretend to be what she’s not. She’s not chasing streams or chart placements she’s having fun, poking fun, and turning personal history into holiday parody.

It’s not meant to be taken seriously, and that’s exactly why it stands out in a sea of formulaic festive fluff.

Echo Rebel Verdict: The Most Unlikely Christmas Single of the Year

We’ll admit it we started this one laughing, rolled our eyes halfway through, and ended up weirdly admiring it by the final chorus. It’s not good in a conventional sense. But it’s brilliant in its commitment to being exactly what it wants to be: loud, theatrical, chaotic, and defiantly individual.

If you treat it like a novelty single, you’ll miss the joke. But if you see it as performance art a meta piece from someone who’s lived their life onstage, offbeat and unfiltered it suddenly makes perfect sense.

“Merry Christmas, I’m So Glad I Didn’t Marry You!” is what happens when heartbreak meets show business in the most festive way possible. It’s a Christmas card to bad decisions, sung with lipstick, glitter, and a ventriloquist dummy who probably deserves her own record deal.

Final Thoughts

April Brucker is a one-woman entertainment tornado. From The Today Show to My Strange Addiction, from cabaret stages to Las Vegas showrooms, she’s done it all and now she’s brought that full-force energy into music. Whether you love it, hate it, or sit there wondering what you’ve just listened to, you can’t deny one thing: it’s pure April.

We don’t even know how to rate this one and honestly, that’s kind of the point.

Echo Scale™: ??/5 – Musically questionable, theatrically unstoppable, and entirely unforgettable.
