Marcelle Chérie’s “ELLEMENTAL”: A Soulful Masterclass from Kingston

Echo Scale:★★★★✮ (4.7)

Marcelle Chérie, a name that’s been bubbling under the surface of contemporary Caribbean music, officially stepped into the limelight in 2023. Now, with her 2025 visual EP “ELLEMENTAL,” she offers a bold, introspective look at an artistry deeply rooted in Dancehall, yet beautifully enriched by Soul, Hip-hop, and experimental influences. Now it is time for us at Echo Rebel to give our verdict.

Sit Pretty: An Immersive Opening Statement

The EP kicks off with “Sit Pretty,” a track that immediately sets itself apart from the crowd. From the jump, it’s clear Marcelle Chérie is not just making music; she’s crafting an entire world. The production is a masterclass in ambience, building a lush soundscape that perfectly cradles her precise, soulful vocals. Beyond the exquisite sound, the song delves into profound themes, bravely exploring societal perceptions of femininity. While a concise opener, “Sit Pretty” is a meticulously detailed and thoughtful introduction, inviting listeners into Marcelle Chérie’s unique vision.

Likkle Bass: Rhythmic Brilliance Takes Centre Stage

Next up, “Likkle Bass” proves to be an undeniable highlight. Again, the production is top-notch – perhaps a touch heavy on the bass, but in the best possible way. This track is a captivating fusion of Dancehall, R&B, and Hip-hop elements, creating an irresistibly catchy vibe. Marcelle Chérie’s command of rhythmic vocal delivery is truly commendable; the song is peppered with perfectly timed plosives that add a dynamic punch. This is the standout track of the EP for me – a truly exceptional piece of work.

Deep Pockets: A Subtle Dip, Still Shines

“Deep Pockets” opens with an excellent use of stereo panning, immediately enhancing the EP’s immersive quality. A cool rhythm penetrates this track, maintaining the overall captivating feel. While I’d say this is the weakest link on the EP, don’t misunderstand – it’s still a cool song. However, it doesn’t quite showcase the full breadth of Marcelle Chérie’s vocal capabilities, and melodically, it didn’t quite grab me with the same intensity as the other tracks. Even so, “Deep Pockets” fits seamlessly into the cohesive narrative of “ELLEMENTAL.”

Tunnel Vision: A Vulnerable, Radio-Ready Anthem

And then there’s “Tunnel Vision.” I absolutely adore this song. Rhythmically, it’s outstanding, and the emotional delivery is so true to its influences. This is an incredibly catchy, radio-ready number that ticks every single box. It’s a genuinely reflective and vulnerable anthem, offering a message that I believe everyone could benefit from hearing. “Tunnel Vision” is a testament to Marcelle Chérie’s ability to create deeply personal yet universally resonant music.

Echo Rebel’s Verdict: A Journey Worth Taking

As a self-professed very white man who plays punk guitar for a living, I’m certainly no seasoned expert in Soul and Dancehall. However, listening to “ELLEMENTAL” has been an eye-opening experience, definitely sparking a deeper interest in these genres. Marcelle Chérie has delivered an absolute cracker of an EP, deeply embedded in her rich culture and experience as a Jamaican woman. Her storytelling, emotion, and commitment to artistic growth shine through every note. I eagerly await her next release; this is simply stunning work!
