Echo Scale™: 4.2/5 ★★★★☆
When my colleague Kenny reviewed Feral Housecats’ last single, “I Luv U But I Hate U2,” he praised their knack for dishing out witty, high-energy garage-punk. With their new song, “Gateway Drug (A Christmas Song),” they’ve not lost a single ounce of that razor-sharp swagger. This track is proof that Columbus, Ohio’s favorite weirdos are still having too much fun to care about anyone’s tidy genre expectations. If you’re looking for easy listening, stop reading now; if you want an eclectic trip through the minds of four absolute lunatics, welcome aboard the Feral Housecats express.
The song is dripping with off-beat style and swing, opening with what sounds like a haunted funfair and maintaining that mischievous energy throughout. The entire track is anchored by a rhythm section with undeniable chemistry. The bassist and drummer lock in perfectly, with a bass tone that sounds like a gift from the gods and a tight, propulsive beat that sets a scene of genuine atmosphere and panache.
On top of this stellar foundation, the band’s cheeky wit takes center stage. While anyone can be sarcastic with lyrics, Feral Housecats prove their unique talent for being sarcastic with their instruments. This is no more apparent than when a snarling, punk-infused guitar line suddenly morphs into snippets of “Barbie Girl” and “Jingle Bells.” It’s a move that says, loud and clear, that they don’t give a damn what you think. They are more than prepared to hold a mirror up to society, themselves, and everything in between.
The Beautiful Shitshow Paradox
For what it’s worth, here’s my one major criticism. “Gateway Drug (A Christmas Song)” is, in many ways, a better song than “I Luv U But I Hate U2.” It’s more complex, more polished, and more interesting. I just don’t think that’s necessarily a good thing for Feral Housecats. The band’s appeal has always been its beautifully chaotic, DIY punk attitude. While this track still has glimpses of that raw, visceral energy, it feels just a touch more sterile than before.
This isn’t to say it’s a saccharine, over-produced pop number; far from it. The guitarists are truly showing their chops, the rhythm section is fantastic, and the vocals are as cool and engaging as ever. But I found myself wanting more of the beautiful shitshow. I wanted more stupidity, more chaos, more Feral Housecats.
Ultimately, “Gateway Drug (A Christmas Song)” is a really cool song, worthy of every bit of its 4.2 star rating on the Echo Scale™. It’s a testament to the band’s skill and shows they can craft something legitimately intricate. My only worry is that in gaining complexity, they don’t lose the messy, unhinged magic that made us fall in love with them in the first place.
